The cycle goes even farther back. Utah was founded by people deeply opposed to federal authority, who believed that he land of Zion (a/k/a the State of Desert) was divinely awarded to their control. That attitude is encoded in the DNA of Utah citizens and their leaders. This core belief lies behind the states opposition to all forms of federal control of federal lands in Utah, from 1856 until today. The intervening fights over the use of the Antiquities Act since 1906 are only symptoms of this deep division.

I needed this refreshing not sensational reminder today as my local Republican rep posted more nonsense why he chose to not renew our Wisconsin state public land fund. Even after 90% of state residents polled were in favor of it. 🫠
