You're not a wimp. Respecting country that can kill you two different ways isn't weakness, it's just paying attention. The people whose constitution you admire didn't skip the part you're standing in. They stood there until it stopped feeling like a stranger, same as you're doing now. That's not a lesser version of their toughness. It's the early chapter of it.
Also, selfishly, I'd trade a lot for a Montana night sky like the one over your place. I love the dark out there more than just about anything, and a real one, no town glow, nothing but the whole spilled mess of it overhead, is getting harder to come by. You've got dog days and a dog star to look up at. Not a bad consolation for the wind.
Welllll I am a fairweather cowgirl about a lot of things. I'm a snow and blue sky princess when I snowboard. I don't like riding my horse in windy weather. I won't elk hunt in subzero temps (which is really the best time to hunt). There's still a little bit of city girl in these bones, and I'm totally ok with being a bit of a wimp. I wear it like a badge of honor. It gets pretty hard here when the wind blows for days.
I'm also tough as nails when I have to be. It's a give and take out here ;) And yes, the night sky is insane. I'm lucky to be here for now.
Ha! Fairweather about the fun stuff, iron about the necessary ones… honestly that's just good triage. Nobody needs to suffer for a snowboard run. Save the toughness for the things that actually deserve it. Wear that badge with honor, you have clearly earned it. The good dark never lasts as long as you want it to, so soak up that sky every chance you get while it's yours.
